As many of you know, my youngest son was diagnosed with Type 1 (aka juvenile) diabetes in October 2008. He went to the pediatrician with us thinking he had a bad cold and a diaper rash. He declined en route to the doctor and once the pedi saw him, he immediately called a rescue and sent us to Hasbro Children's Hospital. By the time they arrived (I was home, hubby had brought him in) the baby was extremely lethargic so they immediately checked his sugar. He was in diabetic ketoacidious and his blood glucose was over 700. They were able to stitch a line into his femoral artery without anesthetic, that's how out of it he was.
We spent four days in the Pediatric ICU and another three days in a regular room. Our entire lives changed that day. Now we check his sugar 8-10 times a day and give him daily injections of two types of insulin. He's 2 1/2 now and is good with the finger sticks but runs from the injections. Who can blame him?
I just wanted to post about JDRF to increase awareness and hopefully someone to donate. The cure is close and we can find it soon. They have already found a cure for the genetic Type 1 (which he does not have) and this cure is not far behind.
The walk for diabetes this year is October 18, 2009 at Roger Williams Park Zoo.
